Buckaroos in BC
In the Interior of British Columbia are extensive grasslands nestled between the mountain ranges. These grasslands have been the home of the BC ranching industry for the last one hundred and fifty years. We invite you to discover the story of the drovers, ranchers, Native cowboys and "buckaroos" that contributed to this unique story.

Tid Bit of O'Keefe History

In 1900 Elizabeth Greenhow kept premature twins, born at 2.5 pounds, alive by placing them in her oven with the door left open. The twins belonged to William Baird, who worked for Elizabeth on the ranch, and his wife Mary Jane Baird. Both twins survived to adulthood.

Please note that all heritage buildings are closed for the season and will open again May 7th, 2016.

Welcome to the official website of Historic O’Keefe Ranch. Situated at the head of Okanagan Lake in the stunning Okanagan Valley, this historic site is a mecca for tourists.  Just a few kilometers from the City of Vernon and twenty minutes from Silver Star Mountain, the Ranch welcomes travelers from all over the world, and extends a particular welcome to its local residents.

The Ranch was founded in 1867, and in its earliest days was at the end of the wagon road into the Okanagan Valley and the site of the stage coach depot.  It was a small, self-contained community, with a Post Office, blacksmith shop, grist mill, and even its own church and cemetery. Many of the original buildings still exist, and are a delight to explore.

Historic O’Keefe Ranch tells the story of early BC Ranching and endeavours to preserve the history and culture of the early ranching era for future generations.
